The Town of Lancaster
could very easily fall victim to a chemical emergency. Chemical
emergencies can occur anywhere due to an accident, human error or
carelessness.
In the event of a chemical emergency,
shelter can be sought inside one's dwelling. Often leaving a home could
result in more harm to residents as a chemical clouds travel.
When a chemical emergency is declared, move
all individuals inside a home or other building immediately.
·
Close all doors to the outside. Close
and lock all windows. Close the drapes and blinds as well.
·
Turn off all heating and air
conditioning systems. Switch off all exhaust fans and turn ventilation
ducts and inlets to the closed position. Extinguish all ignition sources
and close fireplace dampers.
·
Seal bathroom exhaust fan grilles,
range vents, dryer vents, or other openings to the outside with tape,
plastic wrap, wax paper or aluminum foil.
·
Close as many interior doors as
possible in your home or building. Seek shelter in an upstairs innermost
room without windows. Bathrooms work well for shelter. Avoid windows.
·
If a chemical odor starts to offend
you, you can hold a wet cloth over your nose and mouth; Start the shower
on a fine spray to cleanse the air.
·
Avoid elevators. As the elevators
travel up and down, they pump outside air in.
·
Stay tuned to local radio or
television stations for emergency procedures and information.
·
Do not go outside unless emergency
personnel have instructed you to evacuate or until the emergency is over.
When an "ALL CLEAR" message has been issued, open windows and
doors to release any gases which may have entered your home or office.
